作曲はルッジェーロ・レオンカヴァルロ。台本を書くのは得意らしく「マノンレスコー」の台本作者にも名を連ねている。作曲家としては他にマッティナータ Mattinata（朝の歌）という男声歌曲があって、最近はよく歌われるようになった。「道化師」と「朝の歌」なので、検索するとドビュッシーの「道化師の朝の歌」とぶつかる（まァそれは余談だけれど）。「
カヴァッレリア・ルスティカーナ
」と並んで「
ヴェリズモ・オペラ
（現実主義オペラ）」の代表作とされる。歌舞伎の「世話物」というか、最近起こった事件を取り上げているような、現実性の高い様式である。代表的な歌は、テナーのアリア「衣装をつけろ」Vesti la giubba、ソプラノのアリア「鳥の歌／ああ、大空で小鳥たちは自由にさえずり」Hui! Stridono lassu, liberamente、「鐘の合唱／ドン・ドィン・ドン」Don, din, don、アルレッキーノが恋人コロンビーナに歌うセレナーデ「ああ、コロンビーナ」O Columbina。ちなみにアルレッキーノは英語ではHarlequin、「ハーレクィンのセレナーデ」Harlequin's Serenadeとなる。
